1927 Catalog

Wedgwood Patrician

Over 110 Styles & Sizes

This is an attractively bound, professionally produced 34-page color reproduction of the entire Wedgwood Patrician catalog printed in 1927 by Wood, Mitchell & Co. Ltd., Hanley, England. I believe it includes every Patrician piece that was available in 1927.

The catalog is largely made up of drawings and size options for standard items and pieces we hardly ever see, such as the Oval Epergne on Fruit Stand, Pêche Melba, Cruet Set, Oval Tray on Four Feet and many, many others. The many pages of finely executed drawings show all relief ornamentation in great detail, with short descriptions and an astonishing range of size options for some pieces. Where pieces had item numbers, these are given also.

The decorative cover incorporates a large center medallion in the Patrician motif. Additionally there are introductory pages with a photo and description of the original 1782 wax relief that inspired the Patrician design. The informative section that follows explains the Patrician design philosophy and intent. Each page in the catalog has the Wedgwood name and cartouche that forms the basis of the oldest Patrician identification stamp. All text is set in a highly ornamented but easy to read typeface.

Distributed by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, Inc., of America, the booklet also includes several Memoranda pages in which one could record pieces to purchase. The original catalog was a minute elegantly designed 3 1/2 x 6 1/8 -- we have digitized the original at an extremely high resolution so that each catalog page could be produced at a more readable size of 5 1/2 x 10 . The many drawings are beautifully delineated, and each page of drawings has a hand-drafted Patrician motif winding through. A delicately outlined frame encloses each drawing group.

A charming and informative piece of Wedgwood history, and a wonderful and unusual gift for yourself or someone special.

In addition to the original pages, I have added a short description of how the facsimile catalog was prepared, as well as a three page index. This catalog has been produced with careful attention to the original 20's colors of buff, cream, and white, and black or deep buff/gold printing on a cream or grey-blue ground with buff borders.

We have digitally reproduced and restored our original catalog at an extremely high resolution, and printed the pages on heavy gloss and matte papers. This is not a photocopy - our methods allow us to retain an unusual image clarity and depth of detail, sometimes limited only by the production values of the original. Some of our fine reproduction catalogs are already in museum research collections.

This reproduction catalog is meant to be a permanent reference. Its true spiral binding, unlike a comb binding, allows this book to remain unharmed when left open at the desired place. The front and back covers are printed on heavy marbled cover stock, protected by sturdy clear vinyl outer covers.
